CATARACT TREATMENT OPTIONS

It’s a great time to have cataract surgery. Patients have exciting options that can be customized to fit their lifestyle and needs. RGB Eye Associate’s board-certified physicians are proponents of the next phase of cataract treatment, allowing us to offer several of the most sophisticated surgical cataract procedures available.

REFRACTIVE LASER CATARACT SURGERY

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures available today with over 3 million procedures performed each year. In fact, it’s the most common eye surgery performed by our ophthalmologists. For patients selecting refractive laser cataract surgery, they will undergo laser cataract removal as well as receive an intraocular lens (IOL) to treat refractive conditions like presbyopia or astigmatism. The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a new, artificial IOL. Our surgeons use the most advanced techniques that take intraoperative measurements of the eye allowing our surgeons to make real-time adjustments for your implant.

Refractive laser during cataract surgery enables the surgeon to customize the procedure to the individual patient. The laser can be programmed based on the individual’s unique corneal anatomy, making the results more accurate and precise than previously possible with conventional cataract removal. Wave front eye-mapping technology is used in the intra-operative stage where the surgical team adjusts the treatment plan based on the personalized information. Our cataract surgeons observe the unique characteristics of the eye and use these precise measurements to determine the power of the artificial lens needed and select the IOL in real-time for the best vision outcome possible.

Laser cataract surgery may be the best choice for patients who also desire vision correction for a refractive condition. The individualized treatment plan may include the following procedural elements:

  • Femtosecond laser assisted surgery
  • Wavescan intraoperative aberrometer
  • Presbyopic correcting IOL or toric correcting IOL
  • Limbal relaxing incision
  • All pre- and post-operative testing

We offer several varieties of premium intraocular lenses so that we may customize a treatment plan that is right for you. We will make a recommendation based on your individual lifestyle and needs.

TRADITIONAL CATARACT SURGERY

With sutureless cataract surgery, the surgeon removes the cataract and a new intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted through a self-sealing incision. As advances in microsurgery enable the cataract to be removed through such a tiny incision, the eye is able to seal itself with no need for sutures. The replacement lens is also inserted and implanted through that same tiny incision.

Some of the benefits of laser and traditional cataract surgery are:

  • No sutures
  • No need to wear an eye patch following surgery
  • Significantly reduced surgery time
  • Dramatically shorter recovery time
  • Less discomfort following surgery
  • Fewer post-surgical problems or side effects

“Our proactive practice philosophy has been that patients come first and we will secure any proven innovation, technique or technology that provides a better outcome for our patients. Once, cataract surgery was about preventing blindness. We now have an unprecedented level of safety and precision for cataract surgeries, as well as premium lens options that allow for clearer, uncorrected visual acuity. These are exciting advancements and we are honored to bring them to the people of the Texoma area.” – Dr. Robert G. Burlingame, MD
