What is LASIK?

LASIK is the nation’s most popular vision correction procedure and has been used to treat millions of eyes. Advancements in this technology mean you can experience visual freedom with less dependence on glasses and contacts. At RGB Cataract and LASIK, our board-certified ophthalmologists use the latest, most effective laser eye surgery technique to help you achieve your best vision outcome possible: all-laser LASIK. Our LASIK surgeons proudly serve the Gainesville, Durant, and Denison areas.

Chart Showing the Steps of LASIK

At RGB Cataract and LASIK, we understand that the idea of LASIK eye surgery can be an intimidating one. LASIK is a highly advanced procedure that takes only 15-20 seconds per eye, and less than 30 minutes for the entire procedure. With the latest technology and the expertise of our ophthalmologists, you can rest assured that your safety is paramount.

LASIK has quickly become the laser procedure of choice for most patients because of the quick recovery time, as well as fewer side effects and complications than with other methods of vision correction. The LASIK procedure is appropriate for a wide range of people who want the opportunity to experience freedom from glasses and contacts, and enjoy a better quality of life.  Clinical data shows that 98% of mild-to-moderate nearsighted patients, and almost three-quarters of all clinical study patients, could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts following LASIK.

LASIK Surgery offers a lot of benefits:

  • Fast and well-improved vision. A study shows that 95% of patients who have undergone LASIK surgery have an uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/40, whereas approximately 85% were able to achieve 20/20 vision.
  • Long-lasting results. Following a stabilization period of about 3 months, your eye will adjust, and the LASIK results are permanent. There is no need for follow-up procedures, unless the surgeon over or under-corrected your eye. Your improved eyesight will last barring any normal loss due to aging or illness.
  • Results appear about 24 hours after the surgery. You will be able to return immediately to your daily activities almost immediately. Complete healing occurs within 3 to 6 months.
  • A fast and painless procedure. It is done in an outpatient basis and only a local anesthetic will be used. LASIK is painless, although some many find it uncomfortable. The surgery is completed within 10-15 minutes for both eyes.
  • Eliminate the need to use contact lenses or eyeglasses.

If you are tired of blurry vision and wearing glasses and contact lenses, LASIK surgery may be a good option for you. Take our online LASIK Candidacy self-test and find out if LASIK is right for you.

What To Expect

Laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK)

LASIK eye surgery is a procedure that corrects refractive vision problems, reducing or eliminating the need for eyeglasses or corrective lenses.

The LASIK procedure is often referred to by patients as life changing! At RGB Cataract and LASIK, it is important for our patients to know we use only the best and safest technology. This precisely is the reason we perform ALL-LASER LASIK only. The LASIK procedure combines the precision of several lasers (excimer and femtosecond) with advanced diagnostic technology and the skill of the ophthalmologist.

During the LASIK procedure

After you have been prepared for surgery the first laser to be used is called the femtosecond laser. This laser actually makes the required LASIK flap with a laser not a blade-driven device for better safety. The Excimer laser is used to reshape the inner layers of the cornea with high-energy pulses. By adjusting the pattern of the laser beam, high levels of nearsightedness and moderate amounts of farsightedness and astigmatism are able to be treated. The “protective flap” of the cornea (created by the femtosecond laser) is then gently replaced to its original position where it bonds securely without the need for stitches.

After LASIK Surgery

When the procedure is all over and you open your eyes, you will know right away that your vision is much different than what you were used to without glasses or contact lenses. Most patients describe what they are seeing as similar to opening your eyes under water. You will be asked to go rest and get as much sleep as possible before your postoperative appointment the following day.

LASIK has proven overwhelmingly successful in reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Clinical studies show that most LASIK patients (with mild to moderate prescriptions) have the potential to achieve 20/20 vision or near 20/20 vision. Generally, this means they no longer need or have reduced their dependence on glasses or contacts to drive, play sports, watch movies and TV, or participate in careers requiring excellent vision.

LASIK Technology

At RGB Cataract and LASIK we use only the best technology for our patients. Our LASIK technology is delivered via the Johnson & Johnson vision platform known as iLASIK; involving the CustomVue Wavescan system, the IntraLase™ femtosecond laser, and the VISX Star4 excimer laser.

The IntraLase™ technology has proven advantageous over the traditional use of a microkeratome steel blade in flap creation during LASIK for many patients. Femtosecond laser technology for flap creation takes less time, has less healing time, has the capability to treat more varied vision conditions, and is safer. iLASIK technology now has the capability to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

iLASIK Suite

This system’s precision is preferable for many patients because of its superiority in vision improvement, consistency, and safety:

iLASIK is actually a NASA-approved, blade-free, customized laser eye surgery that is available from RBG Cataract and LASIK right here in Texas. Rest assured you’re getting the safest and most advanced LASIK surgery in the world.

LASIK laser vision correction can make a tremendous impact on your life. Imagine being able to play sports, read and swim, all without glasses or contacts. Imagine clearly seeing street signs in the distance! Most people who come into our clinic typically say they wish they’d had LASIK eye surgery sooner. By taking our LASIK self-test you can start the path to understanding if you are a candidate for the procedure.

Man Smiling

In order to completely understand your candidacy we will need to conduct a pre-operative LASIK exam. This is a very thorough eye exam that will analyze your overall eye health but also accurately measure your corneal thickness to ensure you can have LASIK. Each candidate goes through a non-invasive, three-dimensional diagnostic imaging test. This hi-resolution technology captures the subtleties that make your eyes and vision unique. We believe that helping you make the best decision possible depends on giving you the best information available. The decision to have a vision correction procedure is an important one that only you can make.

LASIK Candidates

At RGB Cataract and LASIK we always make absolutely certain that LASIK is an appropriate solution.

LASIK candidates should:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have an eye prescription that has remained stable for at least two years
  • Be free of any diseases that may increase the risks of LASIK or impede the healing process
  • Be aware of the potential risks and benefits of LASIK
