Cataracts

It is estimated that more than two-thirds of people over the age of 65 experience decreased vision due to cataracts. This can make it difficult to perform routine tasks such as reading, driving, or watching television. At RGB Cataract and LASIK, our board-certified ophthalmologists understand the frustration cataracts can cause, and are committed to providing the most advanced treatment options to help you achieve a clearer vision and greater independence.

What Are Cataracts?

An eye condition in which the naturally transparent lens of the eye becomes cloudy, cataracts interfere with the ability of the lens to properly focus light on the retina at the back of the eye. This unfocused light causes vision to appear blurry, hazy, distorted, or cloudy. Cataracts often begin as a slight cloudiness which increases as the condition worsens.

People suffering from cataracts can experience light sensitivity, glare, double vision in one eye, poor night vision, and fading or yellowing of colors. While it’s true that approximately 90 percent of cataracts are age-related, trauma to the eye, inflammatory eye disease, and diabetes can also lead to its development.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Our experienced ophthalmologists work with you to evaluate the severity of your cataracts and will recommend a personalized treatment plan. During your initial appointment, our trained technicians will perform several diagnostic tests.

These may include:

  • A visual acuity test which measures the quality of your vision at certain distances
  • Pupil dilation, which increases the size of the pupil and allows for assessing the health of the entire eye
  • Corneal topography

If you wear contact lenses you may be required to remove them prior to your appointment in order to obtain accurate measurements of your eye. Please call us for specific instructions.

Laser Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures available today with over 3 million procedures performed each year. In fact, it’s the most common eye surgery performed by our ophthalmologists. For patients selecting refractive laser cataract surgery, they will undergo laser cataract removal as well as receive an intraocular lens (IOL) to treat refractive conditions like presbyopia or astigmatism. The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a new, artificial IOL.

With sutureless cataract surgery, the surgeon removes the cataract and a new intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted through a self-sealing incision. As advances in microsurgery enable the cataract to be removed through such a tiny incision, the eye is able to seal itself with no need for sutures. The replacement lens is also inserted and implanted through that same tiny incision.

Our surgeons use the most advanced techniques that take intraoperative measurements of the eye, allowing our surgeons to make real-time adjustments for your implant.
