Scan of an Eye with Macular DegenerationWhile people who are diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration can use large magnifying glasses or strong corrective lenses for everyday use. Currently, there is no treatment for “dry” macular degeneration. There are also no procedures that reverse damage to the macula or the loss of vision that may result from “wet” macular degeneration. However, there is hope in preventing damage for those with “wet” macular degeneration.

Intravitreal Injections

Intravitreal injections typically referred to as Anti-VEGF injections, work to inhibit the growth of new blood vessels. The growth and spread of blood vessels in the eye, particularly around the macula and retina, is the basic problem with “wet” macular degeneration. Inhibiting the growth of blood vessels is an effective treatment for this disease. When Anti-VEGF is injected directly into the eye, it helps to limit or stop the growth of new blood vessels. However, this does require regular treatments approximately every 4-6 weeks. Despite the common misconception, intravitreal injections cause minimal discomfort due to the application of a topical anesthetic. Your ophthalmologist will customize a treatment regimen with one of the available medications based on your particular needs.
